Kate Spade Takes You Inside Her New Label
An interview with Kate Spade
Frances Valentine left Kate Spade 10 years ago. She is now spending time at her daughter Bea’s school. She signed up for everything, library duty, general store, class rep. Now that she's 11 she says I can step back a bit. She has labeled her new line Frances Valentine. My brother, father and grandfather were all named Frances. Valentine is from her mother's side and her dad's middle name was Valentine because he was born on Valentine's Day. The two brands are different because over the past 10 years she is a different person. I had never been a mother and I have never not worked. Starting at 11, I was a movie theater popcorn girl, a babysitter, salesclerk Etc. Frances Valentine is where I am now and what I want to wear now. The style has evolved from since I was a young girl and preppy and then suddenly switched around age 14. I asked my mother to go to this vintage store and she let me buy a leopard swing coat, pink cigarette pants and lime green gloves. My mom was totally out of place in Kansas City Missouri with her big headscarves and pink lipstick. But I loved it. Our number one bag is name for her the" June". She probably would never wear it.
To select a name for each style I usually use a family or friends name. People get invested. Like my sister and will ask, "How's the Ann bag selling?" I am not on social media and I don't care. I cannot imagine anyone wanting to know what I'm doing all day. I just want to enjoy the moment. I admire the style of Rei Kawakubo and Comme des Garcons. The best way to shop Kate Spade is to choose your bag in a store and to buy it online on Black Friday with Kate Spade coupon. I love the twisted sailor tops. I once wore one of them to Bea's school Christmas party and she was mortified. I love to get away on the beach in San Jose Del Cabo Mexico. We rent a house there every Christmas and I invite all my family kids and their kids friends. I like a full house because it's how I grew up. I'm one of six children. I love to sound educated and say that I dive into a good book while I'm there, but in truth I spent time playing with the kids cards, Ping-Pong and board games. My favorite childhood memory is eating dinner in front of the TV watching the Wizard of Oz. With my family now I have dinner at the dining room table, it's our thing. There are no devices, we just sit and talk. We ask what the best and worst thing about our day was. My guilty pleasure is Popeye's and Taco Bell. I try to be healthy but they're just so good. People have this impression that I'm a little kooky, but I'm actually very OCD. I love order and organization and I'm a big list maker. If I cross off too many tasks and it's hard to see the remaining ones I have to start a new list and that's OCD.
